It feels so great to be back in Chennai during the season after what seems like ages. To add to this feeling, I was able to attend three superb concerts during the day – one fully and two partially.

The day’s listening session culminated with a fabulous concert by Sri Sanjay Subramanian and his team of accompanists who assisted him brilliantly. Though I managed to reach this concert only when Sri Sanjay was doing neraval in the main kriti, I was able to enjoy it fully thanks to a brisk ragam tanam pallavi that followed it. While singing the pallavi in ragas other than hamsanandi, Sri Sanjay used popular songs in those ragas to set the tune to the pallavi lines. For example, Sri Sanjay sang the pallavi wordings but used the exact tune of entanErchinA (sudha danyAsi), manavyALakin (naLinakAnti) and brOva bAramA (bahudAri). This made the audience connect with the pallavi well (because of selection of songs they are used to hearing so often).

I am at a loss of words to describe Sri Pathri Satish Kumar’s wizardry on the mridangam. He was his usual self displaying great anticipation skills and mastery over the instrument. Sri Rajasekar on the morsing played very good replies to Sri Satish Kumar’s sollus during the taniavartanam that comprised the chatusra and misra nadais.
