One more of those impressive concerts by Vid Gayathri. I would have loved to stay right till the very end had I not been required to be present elsewhere. I left with a heavy heart just when the stage was set for the main song of the day. Though the recital impressed from the start, the team seemed to just get better and better as each song went by.

Vid Gayathri is one of those musicians whom I admire a lot for her vast repertoire of compositions. Not a single concert of hers has gone by without I being feted to one or more of not-frequently-sung-compositions. Today was the turn of “pAhimAm shrI rAjarAjEshwari” which, though having figured in her earlier concerts and recordings, is not heard much in the concert circuit these days. “okapAri jUDaga rAdA” was also a pleasant surprise as “ennaDu jUtunO” seems to be the more frequent choice of artists when it comes to kalAvatihEmavati and hindOLam alapanas were executed quite well by Vid Gayathri. Vid Akkarai Subhalakshmi was in top form right from the start of the concert. She has got such amazing nAdam. Her alapanas were very very impressive. Her return from US tour is proving to be a boon to Chennai concert-goers. Vid Ganapatiraman and Vid Guruprasad played well. I would have loved to hear them play for the main song and also play the taniavartanam, but for my having to leave early.

  1. Dear Ram,

At the outset I appreciate your quality of being honest by admitting the fact that you could not attend the concert till end. Many of the senior music critics attend only half of the concert and write superflous, bla bla… as if they had attended full concert and pretend to be having had a chat with the artist at the end of the concert.

After you had left, she took Sankarabaranam as a main with Swati Tirunal sahithyam viz.’deve jagajanani amba’ (navarathri krithi). Then she sang a song in AARABI i.e. Sringeri nayike sri saradambike; when she sang the same song at Sringeri Mutt during Sri Ramanavami i.e. 22/03/2007, she said one of her close friends sourced this song and did not know about the composer. When I asked her on 19/05/07, she said “it could be AANDAVAN PICHAI,and not sure.” Please check your database and let me know if possible.

Her penultimate item was a virutham followed by Sri Thanjavur Shankaraiar song ‘ manathir kukandadu muruganin roopam in ‘sindhubairavi’ and she concluded with a thillana of Sri oothukadu venkata kavi.

    See you later, Bye,
    S.Mahadevan.

  2. Dear Sri Mahadevan,

Thank you for giving a detailed account of the rest of the concert. Sri N. Krishnaswami is listed as the author of the song “shringEri nAyikE” in my sources.

    Regards,
    Ram

  3. Shringer Naayike in aarabhi is indeed a very soul-stirring kirthanam. (The song will have lyrics in charnam like Aarabhiraaga priye which is mesmerising)

Gayathri ma’m renders it with utmost bhava. Gayathri ma’m is one of my most favourite female singers. Her music is full of bhakthi and genuineness.

But at times she confuses the lyrics of the songs.

Anyday anywhere i’d love to hear her sing
