Sanjay & TMK Mania

Sanjay (Subrahmanyan) & TMK (T.M.Krishna) mania continues for me unabated. The first half of September was spent immersed in TMK’s music. The latter half of the month saw Sanjay performing a string of concerts while TMK toured outside Chennai and I just went from one concert to another, merrily lapping up the high(est) quality music that was on offer. For me, listening to Sanjay and TMK perform live is like watching Federer and Nadal or Tendulkar and Dravid in top form. Each of them have their own strengths and it’s almost always a pleasure hearing them perform.

Now, here comes the problem that often surfaces during season time: Sanjay and TMK are scheduled to perform in different places this Monday at the same time ๐Ÿ˜ฆ . Where to go?

Its absolutely wonderful, people in Chennai are constantly greeted by these concerts. What is the price range of the tickets. We in the USA, do hope for all this variety.

Most concerts during the year (except Dec-Jan) are free (except for some sabhas which will always keep an entry fee, typically Rs. 25/50/100). The Dec-Jan time (Music Season) is when most sabhas charge for concerts. Price may vary anywhere from Rs. 25/50 to whatever the sabha wants to charge and rasikas are willing to pay.

Knowing how many concerts are going on in Madras right now, I feel like begging you, on my knees, to resume posting song-lists… But of course, it’s selfish of me, and you must have your own demands on your time. Still, it’s only now that one realises what an indispensable resource your blog was, especially in the Nov.-Jan. period. Sigh. ๐Ÿ™‚

    I am an idiot.

I take back everything I said about TMK. Recently I had the good fortune to attend the 84th birthday celebration of the Late Sri. KVN and TMK gave both an energetic and moving performance; with a few uncommon kritis thrown in that were in KVN’s repertoire proving that he is indeed an artiste par excellence.
