Worldspace Satellite Radio

I got my Worldspace Satellite Radio subscription activated yesterday. For more details on what Worldspace is and what it offers, please visit the website . The primary motivation behind getting it was a 24×7 music channel dedicated to Carnatic music called Shruti, a 24×7 Hindustani classical music channel called Gandharv and no channel dedicated to Himesh Reshammiya. Going by the programs that were broadcast yesterday, I should say that I am happy with the subscription. I just hope they don’t start repeating the programs too often.

Apart from these two channels, there are 38 more including the ones on old bollywood numbers, latest bollywood hits, punjabi songs and tam movie songs. Refer to the Worldspace website for more details.

FYI … Advaita is organizing a thematic concert on rare ragas and kritis by veteran Carnatic music Vidwan Sri R.K.Srikantan today in R.V.Dental College Auditorium, 1st Phase, J.P.Nagar, Bangalore. The concert is expected to be from 6:30PM to 9:30PM. Tickets can be bought at the venue. Tickets were priced at Rs 40/head, the last time I attended a concert organized by the same people.

Musical Evening in Mumbai

My brother, R. Shridhar will be giving a carnatic classical vocal concert today at Shanmukhananda Hall, Mumbai from 6PM to 8:30PM. In case you are in Mumbai and want to listen to some classical music, do check it out.

News from here is that one of my quaddies has been shortlisted for interview by a leading Australian I-bank and he is really excited about it. Hope he cracks the interview(s) and gets the job.

More Thyagaraja Aradhanas

Recordings of the Thyagaraja Aradhana organized by Jaya TV recently in Chennai were broadcast today morning. Many top artistes of the carnatic world were there. Some noted young vocalists were not present though. Three top mridangists – Umayalapuram K Sivaraman, Mannargudi Easwaran and Srimushnam Raja Rao led the percussionists. The good part about the program was that the songs were not cut for showing ads. The way Jaya TV has been giving increased importance to music programs in the past few years is commendable. The music festival they conduct during the December Music Season in Chennai and broadcast later on their channel is now very famous.

Moving on to other news from the music world, Shanmukhananda Sangeetha Sabha, a prominent organizer of carnatic music concerts in Delhi will hold its annual Thyagaraja Music & Dance Festival this year from 24th Feb to 5th March. This festival is probably the only one of its kind in Delhi where many renowned carnatic artistes are invited to perform. It is sad that I will not be able to attend the concerts this year.

Read an article on which mentions about plans to demolish Saint Thyagaraja’s house and build a modern memorial there. Please click here to access the article. I somehow do not like this plan at all and agree with the author’s view on this.

More on the music season

Jaya TV organizes music concerts under the banner of “Margazhi Maha Utsavam” every year during the December Music Season in Chennai. These concerts are then broadcast on Jaya TV from Monday to Saturday, 6PM to 7PM and then a portion of each days broadcast is replayed again the next day morning from 6:30AM to 7AM. This year’s broadcasts started on 14th Dec 2005 and are expected to go till 4th Jan 2006. Watched Sikkil Sisters’ flute concert today. Vocal concert by P. Unnikrishnan is scheduled tomorrow. Will not be able to hear it as I have classes at that time. Will try to catch up with the repeat broadcast in the morning.

A program called “Sangeeta Sangamam” comes almost daily on Vijay TV from 6PM to 6:30PM. Also came to know that recordings of the Chembai Music Festival held at Guruvayur Temple, Kerala can be viewed every morning from 6:00AM to 6:30AM on the DD Malayalam channel.

Lakshman Sruthi is organizing a five day musical festival called “Thiruvaiyaaru in Chennai” from the 21st to 25th Dec 2005. To know more details, please click here.

Music Academy season schedule can be accessed by clicking here.

Songlists from some of the season concerts are available here.

Missing this year’s season concerts a lot. Hearing once favorite artistes perform live is an experience quite different from hearing a recording of their performance. Will try to be there in Chennai for next year’s season if all goes well.

Concerts @ Hyderabad

FYI …. Kalasagaram, Hyderabad is organizing a music festival this week at the Keyes High School for Girls, Secunderabad. The following are the concerts scheduled for the rest of this week:

29/11/2005 – Vocal Concert By Sanjay Subrahmanyam
30/11/2005 – Flute Concert By Jayaprada Rama Murthy
01/12/2005 – Vocal Concert By Priya Sisters – Shanmukha Priya And Hari Priya
02/12/2005 – Vocal Concert By T V Sankaranarayanan

I think all concerts start at 6:30PM.

Haven’t been able to go to the concerts that happened till now due to classes. Will try my best to attend Sanjay’s concert today as I am a big fan of his. Will also try to attend the TVS one, if all goes as planned.
